About the Gambia

The Gambia, often called the ‘Smiling Coast’ because of the friendly Gambians, is African’s smallest country (11,300 km²). Going from East to West takes about 320 km, the distance between North and South is about 20 to 50 km. The Gambia is on 3 sides bordered by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean at the West. The country’s main river is the river ‘Gambia’ which flows from East to West through the whole country.

The main language is English but many other local languages and dialects are common.

The climate is sub-tropical with a dry season from half September till the end of May and a rainy season between June and half of September.
